Civic Society was formed in 2019 with the aim of providing a central resource for individuals and groups working to make the area a better place to work and live both in the present and for future generations. The Society has a particular focus on sharing and celebrating our heritage as a means of sustaining pride in the community.

At the initial stakeholder meeting in May 2019 – involving the RSPB, Norman Nicholson Society, Discovery Centre - it was agreed that the initial project of the Society should be an interpretation of the RSPB Hodbarrow site. Discussions are ongoing with the Heritage Lottery Fund to make a small bid (£3000 to £10000) to develop the interpretation of this site.
Interpreting the past, present and future of the Hodbarrow site promotes identity and pride in the transition from industrial powerhouse through to a biodiverse site while emphasising the importance of protecting our environment. Involving the community and promoting physical and mental wellbeing are key factors for this work. It is intended that in conjunction with stakeholders this is the first of other and larger bids for funds to develop our area.

The interests and aims of the Civic Society are aligned to those of Millom Town Council and the establishment of the Society as a working party or sub-committee of the Town Council subcommittee gives the Society status for gaining and holding charitable funds.
The Civic Society, with involvement of individuals from various groups and fields of expertise, supports the Town Council in work related to development of Millom facilities particularly related to its heritage such as the market square. An early success of the Civic Society has been to bring together the RSPB and the Lighthouse Committee to progress work to make the lighthouse safe so the lease can be resumed.
